LIFE SKETCH OF EDWARD PARTRIDGE LYMAN
A thorough account of the life of Edward P. Lyman is found here, and tells of the difficult life Edward led as a boy, and later as a adult.
He was born and lived four years in Scipio after his father left Bluff, where his mother had a pleasant home, then the family was returned to Bluff and the primitive log cabin there. Just four months later, his mother returned to Scipio, leaving Edward in the care of her "sister-wife." His father was often on the range with his cattle, and Edward was often very lonely. His mother came back to Bluff where she remained to care for him, his older brother, Albert, and his sisters.
It seems fair to say that Edward was a "mamma's boy," while Albert was their father's shadow. Albert accompanied Platte Lyman on the range; Edward tended to remain near his mother and the tasks she undertook. Both Platte and Albert were called, just a year apart, to serve missions in England; Edward, without any experience could not be handed the family cattle business; he found odd jobs in Bluff as a means of helping his mother. Albert returned, the two sons undertook the construction of a new rock home for their mother; Platte came home from his mission with cancer, and died before the home was completed.
While Edward and Irene Perkins were neighbors in Bluff, the difference in their ages (8 years) did not allow their acquaintance. Irene's oldest sister, Mary Ellen (Lell), however, married Albert, and Irene accompanied them to the new community of Grayson.
Edward and Albert moved their mother to Grayson, and Edward began to associate with Irene Perkins, his sister-in-law. After his mother's death in 1909, he was called to serve a two-year mission in Iowa. Upon his return, the two of them began more frequent association, and they married in Feb 1913.
Over the next nine years, six children were born to them. Irene was often ill, leaving Edward much of the home responsibility. He operated a garage and bus service (San Juan to the railroad at Thompson Springs), and ran a small farm. His moved the family to Salt Lake City to seek better medical help for Irene, then back to Blanding (Grayson). Here they raised their children.
