LIFE SKETCH ADELBERT FISH MCGREGOR

Adelbert Fish McGregor was born at Parowan, Iron County, Utah , April 4, 1858. He grew to manhood on the farm and ranch, and received a limited education in the district school.

In December, 1878, he was called to accompany Pres. Silas S. Smith, and John C. Dalton, his brother-in-law, on an exploring mission through Arizona and northern New Mexico to find a location for a settlement on the San Juan River. He started on this mission the following April, returning in September.

Soon after his return home, he married Ada Elizabeth Dalton in the St. George temple. In February, 1882, he traveled again with John C. Dalton, this time to help him reach the San Louis Valley in Colorado, where they had been called to settle. On the 22nd of March they arrived in San Luis valley, where the Colorado Saints had established three small settlements. In October he was joined by his expectant wife and year-old daughter, and they together labored to build a home and fill the mission to which they had been called. Five more children were born in Manassa before Ada's death, which likely occurred at the birth of the newest daughter (1887 or 1888 date unclear).

'Dell' returned to Parowan where both sets of grandparents were living, as he sought help in rearing the children. In 1891, he became ill, but got up from a sick bed and went to the racecourse to show off a young horse. He rode bare back around the track. The horse stopped and he fell to the ground. He died in a few minutes.

Although Grandma McGregor had nine children living at home, she still took in Adelbert's oldest daughter, Ada, and the baby AdelIa to her home to raise. Grandma Dalton wanted to take the two other children to raise, but took ill and couldn't care for them, so they moved in with Grandma McGregor. She then raised all four of Adelbert's little children.
