Site 10, Gray Mesa
Gray Mesa is a flat plateau between the Colorado River gorge and the San Juan River. This sand/sagebrush topped mesa was easily traversed. It was on Gray Mesa that Olivia Ekelund Larson gave birth to a baby boy during a snowstorm. Mons and Olivia Larson named their newborn John Rio after the San Juan River, which could be seen from the mesa.

Friday, Feb. 20th, 1880. "Worked the road yesterday, and today drove 7 miles over a smooth bench close to the banks of the San Juan which runs 1 mile below us in a gorge so deep and with banks so precipitous as to be completely inaccessible, camped at the top of the smooth rock over which we will build a road."
